African Americans In The American Revolution, including: Crispus Attucks, James Forten, Prince Hall, Salem Poor, Lemuel Haynes, Mammy Kate, Prince ... Matthews, John Chavis, William Lee (valet)

by Hephaestus BooksHephaestus Books

Hephaestus Books represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. To date, this content has been curated from Wikipedia articles and images under Creative Commons licensing, although as Hephaestus Books continues to increase in scope and dimension, more licensed and public domain content is being added. We believe books such as this represent a new and exciting lexicon in the sharing of human knowledge. This particular book is a collaboration focused on African Americans in the American Revolution.

More info: The American Revolution was not only presented as a fight for liberty for white colonists. Some African Americans saw the Revolution as a fight for liberty, but their own liberty and freedom from slavery. Others responded to the Dunmore's Proclamation, and fought for their freedom as Black Loyalists. Benjamin Quarles believed that the role of the African American in the American Revolution can be understood by "realizing that loyalty was not to a place or a people, but to a principle". Regardless of where the loyalties of the African American lay, they made a contribution that was often disregarded, to the birth of the United States. During the American Revolutionary War, African Americans served both the Continental Army and the British Army. It is estimated that 5,000 African Americans served as soldiers for the Continental army,, while more than 20,000 fought for the British cause.

Pioneer Decoy Carvers: A Biography of Lemuel and Stephen Ward

Pioneer Decoy Carvers: A Biography of Lemuel and Stephen Wardby Barry R. BerkeyCornell Maritime Pr/Tidewater Pub

The Ward brothers were versatile and somber men with intuitive wisdom who were vitally interested in people. While intolerant of cant and hypocrisy, they acquired innumerable genuine friends, and through their friends in and around Crisfield, the authors received tape recordings, photographs, homemade movies, correspondence, and other forms of valuable historical data. Countless hours were spent roaming the streets of Chrisfield, talking with old-timers who knew the Ward boys "befer they was famous". Research extended well beyond the boundaries of the Bay Country, however, for the authors also spoke and corresponded with Lem and Steve's friends and acquaintances across the United States. Shooting stools represent one of America's three folk arts, the ground work of which was laid by decoy carvers such as the Wards who, for decades, made only shooting stools. Yet the Ward brothers, being among the first to initiate the transition from a working decoy to a highly decorative bird, in a sense, led the way toward ornamental carving. Few people know that the Wards carved decorative birds, on special order only, beginning in the late 1920s. The authors were fortunate in obtaining permission from Lem to tread on terra incognita, and to share this knowledge thus, they were able to weave the past into the present and the future so that a vibrant narrative about Lem and Steve's life could unfold.

Haynes's writings constitute the fullest record of a black man's religion, social thought, and opposition to slavery in the late-18th and early-19th century. Drawing on both published and rare unpublished sources, John Saillant here offers the first comprehensive study of Haynes and his thought.
